The benefits of the Eagle Ford shale play are beginning to seep north to San Antonio and surrounding areas.
Officials are saying that population, housing and potential for commercial development could be nipping of the heels of development taking off in counties and cities on San Antonio's periphery as the oil and gas boom moves forward.
The term “play” is used in the oil and gas industry to refer to a geographic area which has been targeted for exploration due to favorable survey results.
With more than 250 oil and gas rigs operating, industry experts say the play could continue to be developed for decades to come.
The play is expected to bring 117,000 workers to the area between now and 2021 and have a $90 billion economic impact to the region.
The UTSA study examines housing in six counties — Dimmit, Frio, La Salle, Maverick, Webb and Zavala — affected by the play, and asserts a need for both multi and single family housing as a majority of newcomers to the area are expected to be “young families with school-aged children.”
